Virgil van Dijk wages: What new Liverpool star will earn after completing £75m transfer

Van Dijk will move to Anfield on January 1 after a £75m fee for the Dutch defender was agreed between the Reds and Southampton yesterday.

The Telegraph report he’ll earn £180,000-a-week on Merseyside after putting pen to paper on his contract.

Van Dijk was desperate to move to Liverpool in the summer and that desire remained in the first-half of the season despite having other interest in his services from Chelsea and Manchester City.

City were previously thought to be frontrunners for his signature but Liverpool raced through talks over Christmas and have now wrapped up a deal.

Van Dijk has been dropped by Southampton for their last two matches.

And they sorely missed him against Tottenham on Boxing Day as Harry Kane and co. ran riot in a 5-2 win at Wembley.

The £75m transfer makes Van Dijk the joint-second most expensive player in Premier League history - and the most expensive defender in world football.

Manchester United's £89m signing of Paul Pogba last year is the current benchmark with their purchase of Romelu Lukaku earlier this year next.

Van Dijk will draw level with Lukaku at the £75m mark, and with his £180,000-a-week contract will earn vastly more than he’s currently on at St Mary’s.
