Reps to get N6.1billion worth of cars before December

The Chairman , House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Abdulrazak Namdas, has disclosed that over 200 members had been given Peugeot 508 series  cars worth about 17 million Naira.  Namdas stated this while briefing newsmen in Abuja.

According to Namdas, 360 members would have taken delivery of their cars by December 31. Each of the vehicles cost N17m making a total of N6.1bn to supply all 360 members.

“We have been able to supply over 200 vehicles as at today and we are working towards getting more before the end of this year, every member will have his or her own car.
“The issue is that the payment and supply of the vehicle is being done in instalments.
“The House and the company (Peugeot Automobile Nigeria Limited) agreed to this arrangement of paying and supplying in instalments.
“Naturally, not all the members can get their cars at the same time and we have explained to them why this cannot be possible, "he said.

However, new members are said to be most pained as they have had to fuel personal cars for work since June, 2015.

Namdas said "We want to make it clear, especially when some members are complaining, it is not designed to frustrate anybody. Member also understands, some of us who are members of House services.

Speaking on whether members need to lobby for the cars, he said
"Let's be clear, it is not actually true that members need to Lobby the leadership to get these cars, we started by saying we will give it to women, people who are not committee chairman and we did.
"We also preferred to give to new members first before the old once, so its a matter of time.
Speaking further on the issue, Namdas said part of the problem was funding challenges was funding, adding that some funding for the cars was included in the 2017 budget.
"We have been able to tell our members from various state. Some people are alleging that because we have increased our budget by 10 billion then we should be able to make full payment for the vehicles  but I want to say that we have not stated implementing that budget.
“You know that we have not started the implementation of the 2017 budget fully.
“You will appreciate the fact that payment for these cars will come from the budget. So, that issue too is there,” he added.
